I’d like a more even smile. What can I expect from… Invisalign?

In our “What can I expect?” series of blog posts, Robert Gair, Dentist at Whickham Dental Practice, answers the most commonly asked questions about Invisalign.

1.What is the Invisalign treatment?

Invisalign is a way of gently and gradually moving your teeth into line to help you achieve the smile you want. We use a series of aligners made from clear plastic, which can be easily removed.

2. Who is the treatment suitable for?

Invisalign is suitable for anyone who has good oral health. It is suitable for teenagers through to all adults. With Invisalign, it is never too late to achieve the smile that you desire.

3. How long will it take to achieve results?

The treatment length depends on how much alignment your teeth need but generally takes between 6-18 months. We provide all patients with an initial consultation, during which we will be able to give you a more accurate estimate of how long it will take to achieve the results you want.

4. Is Invisalign painful?

Invisalign can be slightly uncomfortable at the start, although not painful. You will get used to wearing the aligners very quickly, and you will soon find they become comfortable and natural to wear. Invisalign is generally a lot more comfortable than conventional braces.

5. Will people be able to tell that I’m wearing an aligner.

Unlike conventional braces, with Invisalign, it is very difficult for others to tell you are having any orthodontic treatment. The aligners are clear and colourless, so others are highly unlikely to notice them. The only time they may notice is if you have to take them out to eat, however usually, this is met with interest as Invisalign is a popular treatment and met with positivity from friends and family alike.

6. How long will the results last?

Teeth need to be held in the correct position using custom-made retainers which we will make for you at the end of your treatment. As long as these retainers are regularly worn, the teeth will be held in the position you want them to be in.

7. Are there any risks?

There are some risks to moving teeth however, with proper assessment and treatment planning these risks can be minimised. It is important that your teeth are in good condition before we start with no decay or gum disease so we will make sure your mouth is healthy before we start on a course of treatment.

8. How much will it cost?

Invisalign treatment ranges from £2,500 to £,3975 depending on how complex and long your treatment needs to be. During the consultation, we will talk you through everything, tell you the exact price and discuss payment options if necessary.

9. I am interested and would like to find out more. Who should I contact?
